Two girls, divided by war, find their lives impossibly, extraordinarily intertwined.
MAINLAND CHINA, 1958: Eleven-year-old Shan lives with her grandparents in Communist China. Left behind when her parents fled to the island of Taiwan, she is marked as a counterrevolutionary and denied an education. Watched with suspicion by her neighbors, she worries she’ll forever be seen as a traitor–an especially dangerous status as famine overtakes the nation and even the smallest misstep can bring terrible consequences.
TAIWAN, 1958: Nine-year-old Lihui knows that Taiwan is not home. Someday, the Nationalist armies will retake China from the communists and her family will return. Until then, Lihui’s job is to be a good student, citizen, and daughter. But when a mysterious shard of pottery gives her vivid dreams of a girl named Shan on the mainland—a girl whose daily life raises uncomfortable questions about Lihui’s own—she begins to have second thoughts.
As Shan faces starvation and persecution and Lihui begins to doubt her history, the girls must decide how much they are willing to risk for each other. Because war may have divided their worlds—but love might still find a way across the water.
